Like any successful satirist, Swift had many enemies. Other authority figures are roundly mocked throughout the book. The pettiness of politicians — Whigs and Tories alike — is compellingly conveyed by rendering them small.
That moment where Gulliver urinates on the palace is sometimes interpreted as a reference to the Treaty of Utrecht of , which ceded Gibraltar to the UK — and by which the Tories put out the fire of the War of Spanish Succession with some very ungentlemanly conduct. Konnonzaki in Japan, just south of Tokyo, is a tourist delight. In addition to stunning mountains and beautiful beaches, it is thought to be where Gulliver first set foot in Japan — represented as the port of Xamoschi. American sailors from the Yokosuka Naval Base dress up as Gulliver and parade around the district.
In the first Godzilla movie, the monster also lands at Kannonzaki, then heads toward Tokyo — just like Gulliver. The book jokingly mentions the presence of moons around Mars. The book was published, anonymously, at top speed. Motte, who sensed a bestseller, used several presses to foil any attempt at piracy, and made many cuts to reduce the risk of prosecution. The first edition appeared, in two volumes, on 26 October , priced 8s 6d, and sold out its first printing in less than a week.
Later scholarly editions of Swift have to choose between Motte and Faulkner, but whatever the version it has never been out of print since the day it first appeared. The novel was a satire concerning the travels of its lead character, Lemuel Gulliver, to various exotic lands inhabited by fanciful versions of Humans and animals , including the Lilliputians. Commander Tucker kept an ancient copy of the book in his quarters aboard Enterprise NX ENT : " Cogenitor ".
Kirk described the miniature city as a "Lilliputian city ". Similarly, in Picard admitted that he felt like Gulliver bound by the Lilliputians when the Enterprise came under attack from nanites. TNG : " Evolution ".
At one point, during the formation of the original Star Trek series concept in , Gene Roddenberry and Herb Solow changed the series title to Gulliver's Travels and named the main protagonist Captain Gulliver. Several days later Roddenberry and Solow realized they'd gone too far, and dismissed the Gulliver idea.
